Custom Baskets

Remember the old “Build-a-Bear®” workshops? That’s a little what Vintage Picnic is all about. We help customers create a completely custom look by pulling together all the “ingredients” for a sensational picnic short of the pesto and pino gris. From glassware to linens and from salt and peppers to cutting boards, Vintage Picnic appeals to the creative and romantic in all of us.

We also invite customers to create signature baskets using their own heirloom items – such as grandmother’s damask napkins, or Aunt Libby’s plates. Once we fashioned a Scottish-themed basket lined with a tartan kilt the customer had worn as a youth. Another time goblets with the family crest were the centerpiece!

A Vintage Picnic basket is more than just a gift. It’s about legacy.  Our baskets help anchor enjoyable experiences in memory, family and meaning.

Building a Basket in 3 Easy Steps!

Pick a Basket

There are so many kinds to choose from, and we have loads at our Rock Hall shop. From traditional split oak with hinged lid, to wicker panniers with holders for wine, to square pie baskets. Or crawl up into your attic and bring us one from home. We do our best to repair hinges, refinish stained lids and replace inside linings. We’ll spruce it up and give it a second life!

Equip It

Think of this as the wedding registry part for yourself, or loved one. Have fun choosing plates, drinkware, flatware and linens – as well as cutting boards, salt and pepper, even candles! We have a wide assortment of lovely and unusual pieces:  from high-quality melamine plates to vintage transfer-ware china, silverplate and Thai bronzeware. And so much more!

Accessorize and Personalize

Pull a theme together by choosing coordinating fabrics to line an old basket and add “software” – wonderful utensil wraps, glass and plate pouches, and wine bags to keep everything tucked in and safe. We can also monogram a hang-tag for the outside, or personalize your basket in a variety of creative ways.

Everything in its place!

Wouldn’t you want to open this to the oohs and ahs of your picnic guests?

Sewing basket transformed! Sometimes all you need is a little basket to pull out of the boot (trunk) as you head to the winery to swill the afternoon away. The reds and golds are rich with romance, and the basket handle is silk smooth, well worn with love.

Go WC!

Question: what does one Washington College alum give to another — who happens to be marrying yet a third WC alum?  Answer: a custom basket in true Sho’men colors: burgundy and black! Loved outfitting this with vintage glassware and, gosh, the cutest...

Swan Lake. Sourced this lovely burgundy basket in Fredericksburg, VA and dressed it up with vintage fabrics and embroidered linens. Red transfer-ware plates and a pair of Japanese swan salt and pepper shakers put it over the top! The basket was gently carried to Sydney, Australia by a mum very much hoping to give it as an engagement gift to her daughter. Which she did a few happy months later.

Bird on the Wing – We celebrated spring this year with an awesome whitewashed basket found in Amish country, Strasburg, PA. We added fresh fabric with a parakeet motif, and plates featuring young bulbs. What a treat to eat with Thai bronzeware and drink from Williamsburg-style footed “scrub” glasses.

Ready About! – Loved working with a customer to create this nautical suitcase-style basket! No glass allowed – so we used metal plates and BPA-free shatterproof stemless wine glasses. Red Oxford cloth nicely accents the deep nautical blues.

Happy Customer

Vintage Picnic is a wonderfully unique business. It provides beautiful, one-of-a-kind picnic baskets.  I have purchased three for gifts.  Each was received enthusiastically! Susan makes sure that each one is unique.  They are put together with such thought and beautiful craftsmanship.  I loved them so much that I purchased one for myself.  If you are visiting the Maryland Eastern Sore, make sure to make a trip to Rock Hall, MD to see her lovely store, with beautiful accessories and antiques!

Give Something Vintage

Who came for dessert?

A Monday night dinner with friends. I had a little extra time, so why not make it special? I rummaged  in the corner cupboard and found my mother’s Austrian desert set circa 1940: a lovely painted serving plate in warm pastels and four dessert plates. (One had a chip,...
